How do exchange rates work on payments?

How we convert your balance when you pay in another currency

When you pay in a currency different from your account's, we convert the money at the live rate. You always see the rate and the final amounts before you confirm.

When is my money converted?

Your money is converted when the recipient gets a different currency from the one in your account. For example, when you pay Mexican pesos by SPEI or Colombian pesos from your digital dollar (USDs) account.

Payments in the same currency aren't converted. For example, reais sent by Pix from your BRL account, or digital dollars sent to another ARQ account by $ARQtag.

Where do I see the rate?

  1. On the amount screen, enter either 'You pay' or 'Recipient gets'. We calculate the other amount for you

  2. Click 'Review transfer'

  3. The 'Confirm payment' screen shows the 'Exchange rate', what you pay and what the recipient gets

If the recipient must get an exact amount, for example to settle an invoice, enter it in 'Recipient gets'.

The rate you see already includes our fees. For other costs, see ARQ Business costs and fees.

Is the rate locked?

No. Exchange rates move with the market, and we don't lock quotes. The rate is set when you confirm the payment.

If you leave the confirmation screen open for more than 15 minutes, you may see "Unable to book transaction! Please refresh the page and try again." Refresh the page to get an updated rate, then confirm again.

Can the amount change after I send?

Only if the payment needs an Admin's approval. In that case, we use the rate at the moment the Admin approves it, so the final amount may differ slightly. See How do payment approvals work?
